Author Interview with Deborah Baker

Hi Deborah, first of all, could you tell us a bit about yourself.
I've been a health care practitioner for the past 34 years, Chiropractor, Homeopath, Master's in Nutrition, mostly doing functional medicine.  But I've always had a burning interest in fantasy, magic, etc.  A much different side of me, I know.  About five years ago, after having made notebooks full of ideas, I sat down one very wintry Saturday afternoon and started to write my first book of The Persephane Pendrake Chronicles.  The pie in the oven, burned, but the first three chapters were born.

What do you think makes your genre special?
I think there is no end to the appeal of fantasy, whether it is high fantasy, urban, mythology based or what ever draws one. Anything is possible and particularly in this time, so many answers are sought out, so many issues need to be solved or at least forgotten to get away for even a short time, in a great story.

What do you think makes a great story?
I love a good conundrum with characters I come to love and care about, taking it on and finding solutions.

What is your latest book called and could you explain to us in 20 words what it is about?
The latest (almost done) is The Persephane Pendrake Chronicles-Two-The Cauldron of Ceridwen.  Persephane and her cohorts are seeking out object two of the ultimate nine which the depraved Melanthios seeks to become the 'All Powerful One'.  They are faced with abduction, multi-verses, dark forces, the conversion of a mundane friend to a magical being…and of course being now sixteen, chaotic emotions.

Which kind of reader do you think will enjoy your book?
This one is older than the first, more 13 - 19 age bracket.  But many of my readers are adults of all ages, so one never really know.

Is it a Standalone, or part of the series? If it the latter, how long do you think will it go on?
It's part of the nine book, three trilogy series.  I may take it further, but that's not decided yet.

What influenced or inspired you writing it?
My personal love of fantasy, the whole witch/wizard thing. And I used to make up some of these stories when we home schooled our kids, years before.

Why did you choose especially this title? Was it your first choice?
Yes, her name just jumped at me one morning in the shower.  I knew that's who she was.

What was the hardest part for you working on your book?
Solving some aspect of the story.  Sometimes I work a plot line over for weeks. But it always makes itself known.  It becomes completely clear and resonates with the rest of the story.

Was there a scene that you didn’t want to add or remove in your finished work?
There are always a couple I either don't like or have to remove to make the story flow better, but I wished they would have worked.  But those I tuck away for another book, maybe. This is going to be a long ride, so I never know where it could come in handy.
Do you already know what to do next?
Yes, not in detail, but I know how the series ends.

Where can we find more about you and your books?
The site for the books is www.lady-ellen.com  The Facebook, Twitter is @LadyEllen  and Pinterest.
Any last words?
Sure, to those who want to write..just do it.  Start with dialogues between your characters and keep filling it out, use description only as you have to, to set a scene up, but really, it's all about the dialogue. Just my take.

What to read AFTER Harry Potter, you ask? What is the best fantasy e-reader book to read? Try this…Enter a magical world of mystery and wonder, where fantasy reigns supreme and casual chatter sparkles green. Meet Persephane (or Persy as she prefers), Thaddeus, Benson and P-C as they embark on their enchanted adventures to thwart the evil, black witch Melanthios... Push the outer boundaries of your imagination into a world where Persy (a very talented almost 13 year old witch, magic her 'modus operandi') and her close friend Thaddeus (a 13 year old wizard) with their familiars –Benson (a very cheeky dragonfly) and P-C (a far from brave dragon) pit magic, bravery, skill and allegiances from a swarm of magical creatures against the tall, dark and malevolent Melanthios. "Best new fantasy series books" one reader claims…. Follow them as they wind through periods in time, to discover ancient magic from cultures all throughout the history of the world in this best fantasy book in a long time. Success for Melanthios means that the entirety of this planet will fall under her control. Our world will become dark, bleak, cold and lorded over by her demons – forever. Pull up a chair, sit back, and join them in their quest as Persy and her friends race against fate and time, to stop Melanthios from her evil plot to collect nine mystical objects of power scattered throughout the world to become the –All Powerful One.– Persy, Thaddeus, Benson and P-C are assisted by a highly adept, scrying gypsy named Vadoma, a vampire with a rather warped sense of humor - Count Pseudomorphius the Sanguine who is known as Murph...for obvious reasons. Not to be forgotten is the twelve member Magical Governing Council, which Persy's grandmother Laurel is one of the lead members. Each member specializes in a particular area of magic and all have a gift to give our heroes to further enhance their chances against Melanthios. But is it enough? Melanthios is evil and heartless....and VERY powerful... As if she isn't enough to worry about...also on the dark side is a slippery, loathsome Chinese Socerer...aiming to usurp Melanthios and beat her at her own game..and along the way...dispose of Persy and her crew! Will this ever end? What chance does our team stand? You'll see... Visit her site at www.lady-ellen.com ..a new fantasy author to be followed...Amazon
